Baroque alto recorder in F after Debey, A:415 Hz en A:392 Hz

Very little is known about woodwind maker Debey, not even his first name. We’re not sure if he was Belgian or French and only three of his instruments have survived, one alto recorder and two (ivory) oboes.

This recorder is in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It is made of stained boxwood, the pitch is at A:415 which is quite exceptional for an instrument from that time (most wind instruments were lower than 415). The turning work is very refined.

This is a very versatile instrument because it is easy to play and has a pleasant, warm sound. It works well in all registers and compared to the Denner, the Debey is more ‘introvert’, which makes the instrument suitable to play in all kinds of different settings and musical styles.

Because of its overall good qualities I have chosen this recorder as the basis for my alto recorder in A:392, f.e. to play French baroque music.
